Summer Reading Plan kicks off next month

Beginning the week of June 3 through the week of July 19, the 2013 SRP (Summer Reading Program) will be in full swing, so get ready to do some serious reading. Programs have been prepared for children, teens, and adults and promise to be fun-filled. This year’s theme is “Dig Into Reading @ Your Bossier Libraries.”

Attend as many of the programs as you like. You are not required to attend all of them in order to participate. Please note that there will be no programs the week of July 1—5 in observance of the 4th of July holiday.

For your convenience here is a quick reference list to the weekly SRP Schedules:

Children

Monday, East 80 Library, 10a.m. for ages 6—12

Tuesday, Benton Library, 10a.m. for ages 6—12; and Plain Dealing, 2p.m., for ages 6—12

Wednesday, Haughton Library, 10a.m. for ages 6—12; and Koran, 2p.m. for ages 6—12

Thursday, Bossier Central Library, 10a.m. for ages 6—8; and 2p.m. for ages 9—12

Friday, Aulds Library, 10a.m. for ages 6—12

Teens

Tuesdays, in the History Center Meeting Room from 3:30–4:30p.m., for ages 13—18

Book It Libraries Expo is this Saturday

“Book it to the Bossier Parish Libraries Expo,” on Saturday, May 11, from 1—5p.m at the Bossier Central Library. “How To” is the theme. Wear comfy clothes because we will be outside where you can walk around at your leisure.

 

Grab a bag of popcorn and then head to the Music Mountain water wagon to quench your thirst. Stop by the Friends booth and to have your face painted. Take in a cooking demo, a Zumba class, or try your hand at mosaic art crafts and puppet making. There will be plenty of fun things to learn “How To.”

 

The Bossier Arts Council, Friends of Bossier Parish Library, Bossier Fire Department, Red River National Wildlife Refuge, and Pet Education Project with Therapy Dogs are just some of the organizations and agencies participating in the event.

 

Be sure to go inside the library and check out a few books, DVDs, and audio books or use the computers. Take the kids into the Children’s Library to find their own books and use child-friendly computers.

 

Get a library card at the Circulation Desk if you do not have one. They are free to all ages.

 

Visit the History Center to learn about Bossier Parish’s early years where a Caddo Indian diorama, a steam boat, and a log cabin exhibit tell the story. Ask about the extensive genealogy resources located there.

State Library announcement: “Effective June 1, 2013, we will cancel the statewide subscription to Teen Health and Wellness and to Career Cruising. These were funded by BTOP (Broadband Technology Opportunities Program) funds and we asked for funding to keep them going, but it was not allocated.” These subscriptions were available through the Bossier Parish Libraries website link to the State Library.

The CAC (Creative Art Connection) Spring Art Festival is on display at the Bossier Central Library through the end of May.

Saturday, May 18, at 2p.m., in the History Center meeting room WWII veteran Ray Urban of Bossier Parish’s “Theatre Eclectic” will present a World War II retrospective and his traveling “WWII Mini-Museum.” Free to the public.
