Baseball tournaments begin today
Two Bossier Parish teams won Dixie District 4 softball championships in Minden Wednesday and another finished runner-up.
The Bossier 11-12-year-old team fought its way back through the losers’ bracket to win its division.
The Haughton 7-8 team went undefeated in its division. The Bossier 13-14 team finished runner-up.
All three teams advanced to their respective state tournaments, which will be held later this month.
The Bossier 11-12 defeated West Monroe 17-4 for the title.
Makayla Strother, Jillian Cochran and Ally Craig all had two hits to lead Bossier. Taylor Jones tripled and Angel Martin doubled. Lindsay Hutcheson and McKenzie McEntee had singles.
Other members of head coach Julie Cochran’s club are Savannah Simons, Kyra Turner, Brooklynn Sutton, Olivia Broussard and Allie Andersen. Assistant coaches are Carol Andersen and Ashley Jones.
The Haughton 7-8 team won a 21-20 thriller over West Monroe in the championship round.
Brooklynn Bockhaus and Adrienne Vickers both singled and homered to lead coach Becky Bockhaus’ team.
Madison Trujillo also had a home run. Kelsey Coburn doubled twice and tripled. Averi Phillips had three hits, while Hannah Jones, Alli Jenkins, Alisa Talley and Kaleigh Brown had two apiece.
Other members of the Haughton squad are Lexi Normand, Jackie Borah, and Mia McWilliams.
The Bossier 13-14 All-Stars lost a tough 10-9 decision to West Monroe in the finals.
Melissa Gillenwater struck out eight and singled to lead Bossier. Miranda Scotten doubled twice and singled. Kaitlin Walker singled twice.
Bailey Tuberville, Brittany Bryant and Emily Vaitkus all had singles.
Other members of the 13-14 team are Rebecca Lynch, Belle Montalbano, Kendall Lewis, Brittany Nelson, Kaylee Adams and Rachael Charrier.
Five local Dixie teams, including the Bossier 13-year-old All-Stars, are competing in the Dixie 13s and 14s district tournaments, which start tonight at Walbrook Park.
The Bossier All-Stars open play against the Shreveport All-Stars at 8.
Members of the Bossier team are Jake Mayfield, Thomas Bush, Ryan Lawhorne, Josh James, Coleman Nerren, Anthony Mulrenin, Peyton Donaldson, Peyton Jordan, Jared Franzaglio, Jonathan Plant, Connor Jack Smith, Ethan Parks and Zachary Hire.
Coaches are George Fauber, Keith Bush and Duane Lawhorne.
The Bossier 14s team is not playing in the district tournament.
The Dixie 13s and 14s state tournaments will be played in Bossier City starting July 21. That means both Bossier teams earn automatic bids.
All-Star teams from Bossier and Benton are playing in the 9-10 and 11-12 “O” Zone tournaments in Minden.
In the 9-10 division, the sub-district tournament runner-up Bossier Nationals face the Minden Continentals at 5:30 p.m. and the Bossier Americans play NOLA at 7:30.
The Bossier “O” Zone team takes on Ruston at 7:30.
Members are the Bossier “O” Zone team are Jonathan Brandon, Chase Hodges, Hunter Hollis. Amani Larry, Hunter Nycum, Harrison Tauzin, Jake Fayard, Che Lopez, Trevor Tamburo, Hayden Travinski, Buzz Vorachek and Kaimana Williams.
Brandon, Hollis, Nycum and Vorachek played on the Bossier team that won the Little League 11-12 district championship last week.
