The way David George figures it, he’s been coaching baseball at various levels for 29 years.
Becoming a head coach at the high school level has always been a goal.
Now he’s got his chance.
George has been named head coach at Bossier High, principal David Thrash said Monday.
George, 50, didn’t start his teaching and coaching career until he came to Bossier three-and-a-half years ago.
“That’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” he said of becoming a head coach. “I was in private business before I started teaching. Then I went to school off and on. When my kids grew up and got out of school I really hit it hard.”
He has served as an assistant baseball coach, assistant varsity football coach and head freshmen football coach.
George has plenty of experience coaching high school-age players besides being an assistant at Bossier.
In 2007, he coached the Bossier Cyclones to the American Legion state championship. It was the first team from Northwest Louisiana to win the title in 57 years.
George takes over a team that went 11-16 overall and 0-6 in three-team District 1-3A last season. The 1-3A champion, North DeSoto, also won the state championship.
George said a priority of his will be to try to create more interest in baseball in the Bossier High area, especially at the middle school and youth levels.
He pointed out that most of the other schools in the parish have players that grew up playing the sport. That’s not necessarily true at Bossier.
“I think we have to do a better job of getting kids involved at a younger age,” he said. “At these other schools, they have kids that start at a really young age. We don’t. They don’t start playing baseball until they get to high school. That’s going to be a big thing to do.”
George knows it will be a challenge.
“It’s going to be tough, trying to get a lot more kids out,” he said. “But I think I can do it.”
He sees a lot of potential at Bossier, which won the District 1-3A championship in football and basketball last season.
Many of the players coming back this season are juniors who have two years of playing baseball under their belts.
“I’m kind of excited about it,” he said. “The juniors we have have been playing a couple of years now. They know a lot more than they did two years ago. Our whole infield started as freshmen.”
George will continue to serve as head freshmen and assistant varsity football coach.
Bossier has also hired former Southwood head baseball coach Brian Harvey to be George’s assistant.
