Haughton boys, Benton girls take regional titles

Parish athletes perform well  in I-5A meet

ashtonheinzBossier Parish athletes made a strong showing in the Region I-5A track and field meet Wednesday at Lafayette High School.

The Haughton Buccaneers won the boys championship a year after winning the 4A regional title. Haughton was the Class 4A state runner-up last season.

The Bucs scored 70 points to edge runner-up Byrd by three points and third-place Airline by eight. Parkway finished seventh with 31.

Parkway finished seventh in the girls division and Airline was eighth.

Three parish athletes claimed individual honors.

Haughton’s Mitch Landry was named Outstanding Track Performer in the boys division. Airline’s Cameron Rice shared Outstanding Field Performer with Ruston’s Devin Price.

Parkway’s Alison Ringle was named Outstanding Track Performer in the girls division.

Landry won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 27.26 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:39.44.

Rice won the high jump with a leap of 6-4 and finished second in the triple jump with a 44-10.25.

Ringle won the 1,600 in 5:20.55 and the 3,200 in 11:42.64. Both were season bests.

Other parish regional champs in the boys division were Airline’s Jack Wilkes (800, 1:58.75), Airline’s Eric Burns (discus, 129-6) and Haughton’s Jermichael Bell (110 hurdles, 15.48).

Wilkes also finished second in the 3,200 in 4:34.89.

Other parish regional champs in the girls division were Airline’s Rodnecka Seamster (300 hurdles, 45.09) and Jasmyn Carswell (triple jump, 35-10.5).

Seamster cut almost a second off her best time this season. Carswell’s jump was almost a foot better than her previous best.

alexmartinThe top three individuals and relay teams qualified for next week’s state meet in Baton Rouge.

Haughton freshman Javonte Woodard qualified in three events. He finished second in the long jump, third in the 300 hurdles and ran a leg on the second-place 4X100 relay team.

Other parish boys state qualifiers are Haughton’s Micah Larkins (third, 200), Parkway’s Corey Hamilton (second, 400), Airline’s Matt Henry (third, 1,600) and  Parkway’s Chris Kennaday (second, 300 hurdles).

The Haughton foursome of Bell, Larkins, Kyonz Smith and Ty Shilling finished third in the 4X200 relay.

Kennady’s time of 40.25 in the 300 hurdles was 1.49 seconds faster than his previous best this season.

Haughton’s Emily Lantz and Brittany Robinette finished 2-3 in the girls high jump to qualify for state.

Other parish girls qualifiers were Airline’s Oniesha Holmes (third, 100), Parkway’s Alayna Nevins (second, 800) and Parkway’s Adrienne Rogers (second, 300 hurdles).

Nevins ran a 2:24.32 in the 800, cutting more than three seconds off her previous best this season.

Rogers’ 45.73 in the hurdles was her best time this season.

Region I-3A: The Bossier girls won the 4X100 and 4X200 relays.

The foursome of Erial Cummings, Aymirs Anderson, Melia McRea and Darshay Johnson ran a 50.31 in the 4X100.

Cummings, Anderson, Johnson and Simmone Small ran a 1:46.8 in the 4X200.

Johnson finished third in the 200, and Small took third in the 400 to qualify for the Class 3A state meet in those events.

Maya Singleton qualified in the shot put (second) and discus (third).

The Bossier boys qualified for the state meet in all three relays.

The Bearkats’ foursome of DeAndrea Fedderick, Jay Tutt, Marc Calhoun and Terrance Davis finished second in the 4X100 in 43.42.

Tutt, Davis, Tevin Robertson and Devonte Hall finished second in the 1:30.96.

Malik Dunn, Davis, Hall and Robertson were third in the 4X400 in 3:35.7.
